Busting the myths about Bowen

AS a Bowen Technique (Bowtech) therapist and instructor, Helen strives to raise awareness of the benefits of this complementary therapy, known for its gentle approach to physical and emotional health problems.

In Stress Awareness Month, we thought it would be helpful to ‘debunk’ some of the common myths surrounding Bowen Therapy while shedding light on its true nature and benefits. Many of Helen’s clients have told us they feel more relaxed and less stressed after a Bowen treatment, which can lead to more restful sleep.

Myth 1: Bowen is a form of massage
While both involve ‘hands on’ Bowen operates on a totally different principle. Rather than kneading the muscles, Bowen therapists use subtle movements over specific points of the body to stimulate the nervous system and the fascia with a pause in between moves. The aim of these very precise moves is to encourage the natural healing process and return the body to a balanced state.

Myth 2: Bowen Therapy is painful
Bowen is a light-touch non-invasive therapy with clients often reporting feeling deeply relaxed during and after a session.

Myth 3: Bowen only treats musculoskeletal problems
While Bowen is commonly sought for back pain, neck/shoulder problems and sporting injuries its benefits can extend far more widely. Because of its effect on the nervous system, Bowen can also support the body in managing stress, improving sleep quality, enhancing digestion and creating a feeling of wellbeing.

Myth 4: Many sessions are needed to see results
Some clients experience noticeable results after just one session while others may require a series of treatments to achieve best results. Your therapist will advise depending on the presenting problem. Bowen aims to stimulate the body’s own healing process which can continue to work between sessions.

Myth 5: Bowen is only suitable for adults
Bowen Therapy is safe and suitable for all ages from infants to the frail elderly, who may require to be seated rather than the usual prone position.

Myth 6: Bowen Therapy is a quick/temporary fix
While Bowen may provide rapid and immediate relief in some cases, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Every body is unique! Depending on individual circumstances true healing can take time and may require a multi-faceted approach such as changes to lifestyle, better self-care and regular treatment sessions.

The Bowen Technique is a gentle therapy shown to have a profound effect not only on physical ailments but also in terms of mental and emotional health.
